Semen AnalysisMy partner has had a semen analysis in the last few months - is it necessary to repeat this test before coming to the clinic? Most referring physicians will request a semen analysis in the course of your investigation. However, this does not usually include a sperm antibody screening panel. This additional test is used for determining your treatment plan. A repeat analysis is therefore necessary. What can affect the quality of a sperm sample? The use of drugs such as marijuana, tobacco products and other non-prescription drugs can reduce the quality of a sample. Certain prescription medications may also have an effect on the sample. Exposure to certain environmental agents may also reduce the viability of a sample. If you (or partner) feel that these might be an issue please ensure that we are aware of these conditions. Why do samples have to be produced at the laboratory? Temperature variations can greatly affect the motility of sperm in a sample. This, combined with transport times to the laboratory can adversely affect results of the semen analysis. Samples produced at the laboratory are immediately placed in temperature controlled incubators eliminating interference from outside factors.
