In vitro fertilization (IVF) means "fertilization in glass" or in the laboratory. IVF involves six main sequential steps: 1) ovarian suppression or downregulation of the pituitary gland, 2) ovarian superovulation, 3) egg retrieval, 4) fertilization and embryo assessment, 5) embryo transfer and 6) luteal phase support and pregnancy follow-up.
