Evaluating Female Fertility
Fertility depends on the ovaries releasing healthy eggs and the reproductive tract must enable an egg to travel into the fallopian tubes where it can unite with sperm. Following fertilization, the embryo must move to the uterus and implant itself into the uterine lining. The purpose of fertility testing is to identify issues at any of these stages.
Investigations may include:
- Blood work for hormone levels, for example follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) and progesterone levels
- Diagnostic imaging, for example pelvic ultrasound to evaluate the ovaries and uterus, hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to evaluate the fallopian tubes and uterus or saline sonohysterogram (SHG) to evaluate the uterine cavity.
