Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility enhancing treatment that involves placing sperm, which has been separated from the seminal fluid through a process called sperm washing, directly into the uterus using a small sterile catheter. It improves the chance for pregnancy by placing an increased number of healthy motile sperm closer to the egg/eggs at the time of ovulation.

When is IUI used?

This treatment is used for treating mild male factor infertility, coital factor (difficulty with intercourse), unexplained infertility and for inseminating donor sperm (TDI). IUI may be used in combination with oral or injectable, ovulation induction or augmentation medications in a cycle.

What are the success rates of IUI?

Success with IUI varies from person to person and is influenced by key factors such as age, underlying fertility concerns, sperm quality, and whether ovulation-inducing medications are used. For individuals under 35, pregnancy rates typically range from 10–20% per cycle, with success gradually declining as age increases. These figures are in line with the natural conception rates seen in couples without fertility challenges.
