IVF stands for in vitro fertilization and is the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) as a means of achieving pregnancy.
IVF involves removing eggs from the ovaries and combining the retrieved eggs with the designated sperm source in the laboratory. The sperm fertilizes the eggs in the culture dish to create embryos, which are then transferred into the uterus, ideally one at a time when appropriate.
IVF may also be a suitable option for aspiring parents who want to preserve embryos for future use, want to test for inherited disorders before embryo transfer, plan to use donor eggs or sperm or intend to use a surrogate.
